Dear Editor,
My daughter plays volleyball for Duncan High School, and I sat
in the stands all day last Saturday watching her team and many
others play in the Noble tournament. One of the best teams in
the tournament was from Guymon. Although all three of my
daughters have played high school sports, from basketball to
golf and everything in between, this was the first time we'd
ever seen or played anyone from Guymon High School. Let me
just say that I (and all the fans from Duncan were) very
impressed, and not just with the level of play. In a day when
many spoiled and selfish attitudes have made their way down
from the professional and college player, onto the high school
field of play, it was refreshing to see an entire team of kids
show some real character on the court.
From an athletic standpoint, their level of play and teamwork
was fun to watch. They were aggressive and hustled after every
loose ball, even though (from what I heard) they spent most of
the night on the road after their Homecoming to make the first
game at 9:00 AM. From great passers to setters, to a couple of
great killers, your girls had it all. Their communication with
each other during games was outstanding, which is key to any
solid volleyball team. You could tell they'd spent a lot of
time in the gym together and their coach had really pushed the
finer points of the game to them.
But it was the girl's spirit, attitude and character that
really stood out to the fans in the bleachers on Saturday. It
was obvious that your girls were all friends and truly enjoyed
being with each other, whether on the court or just hanging
out in the stands between games. That attitude never changed
whether they were winning or behind on the scoreboard. My
wife and I watched them after their many wins and when they
experienced their lone loss in the Championship game, and they
showed great character and sportsmanship at all times. We're
always telling our kids, that real character is how you act
when there's nobody around (or in this case when you don’t
think anybody is watching). There were several people
watching Saturday, and Guymon, your High School Volleyball
girls were great representatives of themselves, their
families, their school and their city last weekend. You should
be Proud! Before last Saturday, Guymon was just the town in the
panhandle that got all the snow every winter. After last
weekend, the folks in Duncan will have different thoughts pop
into our heads when the weatherman talks about Guymon. It will
be thoughts of great spirit, talent, poise, sportsmanship and
character. Great Job Girls!!
