Randy Costilla watched this pitch sail on by, but
he more than made up for it with his offense. Costilla went
3-for-5 with a home run in the Tigers’ 14-11 win over Clayton,
N.M. on Monday afternoon.
CLAYTON, N.M. — The Guymon High School baseball
team scored at least one run in every inning but the seventh as
the Tigers won their third straight game, 14-11, on Monday.
The Tiger varsity has scored 40 runs in their
past three victories.
Doug Smoak entered the game in relief of Eddie
Ortiz and picked up the win, his second of the season. Smoak
surrendered five walks, four runs and four hits while striking
out three in nearly five innings of work.
“We did good,” Guymon coach Dave Woodard said.
“We were up 9-0 in the third inning and let them get back in
with some walks and errors. But, I wasn’t worried. Our sticks
were alive.”
Guymon stands at 5-1 heading into today’s
doubleheader against Perryton, Texas (4 p.m.) and Beaver (6
p.m.).
Randy Costilla was the big bopper — going 3-for-5
with a home run, double, two runs scored and four RBIs produced.
Landon Huckins went 2-for-4 with a double and
three runs scored. Andy Galindo was 2-for-5 with a triple and
two runs scored. Smoak helped his own cause by going 2-for-3,
also reaching base safely on two walks, plus two RBIs.
In the opening inning, Raul Carrillo and Huckins
were hit by pitches and scored. A run-scoring double from
Costilla highlighted Guymon’s three-run second inning.
Huckins drove home Carrillo with an RBI single in
the third. Costilla followed that with a two-run dinger to
complete the scoring the Tigers’ three-run third. That was
Costilla’s first homer of the season.
Galindo’s RBI triple was the highlight of
Guymon’s four-run sixth.
Clayton closed the gap to 9-7 on the Tigers in
the bottom of the third, but the Yellowjackets would never forge
ahead.
