Guymon High School pitcher Andy Galindo returned
to form on Tuesday at Asa Howard Field. Galindo struck out 10
batters, walked three and allowed three hits in a complete-game
shutout.
The Guymon High School varsity baseball team
needed to accomplish two goals in Tuesday’s game versus Clayton,
N.M.
First, the Tigers needed a win after taking some
serious licks at the Interstate-40 Tournament in Clinton last
weekend.
Secondly, Guymon had to show it could win by
taking advantage of someone else’s mistakes.
Mission accomplished. The Tiger offense parlayed
six Clayton defensive errors into an 8-0 victory at Asa Howard
Field.
Guymon manager Dave Woodard thought the
Yellowjackets were going to pose more of a problem than they
actually did.
“That’s a different ball team we saw out there
today,” Woodard said. “They can play with any team in this part
of Oklahoma. But, we showed up and we played well.”
The Tigers improved to 7-9 on the season heading
into the “Battle of the Big Bats” Tournament, which starts in
Hobart Thursday. Clayton is 2-2; it will begin New Mexico
district play next Tuesday at Tucumcari.
Guymon took advantage of a team that hasn’t
played many games this season. In fact the Yellowjackets have
only 15 scheduled contests for the entire regular campaign.
As for the Tigers, the experience in Clinton,
although painful, seemed beneficial last night.
“The guys wanted to bounce back today,” Woodard
said. “The guys got back up today.”
Two players shone in this game.
Andy Galindo rediscovered his pitching form. And
outfielder Landon Huckins delivered a key two RBI double in the
third inning to help blow the game wide open.
Galindo struck out 10 batters in a complete
seven-inning performance. He walked three and sprayed three
hits. Guymon’s defense committed only one error behind him.
Clayton left Raul Garcia, who was the losing
pitcher of record, stranded at third base twice in the contest
in the first and fourth innings. Tiger catcher Raul Carrillo
also had two putouts on potential Yellowjacket base-stealing
situations.
Galindo reached base safely on a two-out error in
the first. He subsequently stole second and third base and
scored on Randy Costilla’s RBI single to right field.
In addition to Huckins’ RBI double during
Guymon’s five-run fifth, Clayton produced three errors to help
the Tiger offensive production.
Guymon added two more runs in the fourth, with
Huckins coming through again. His two-run single scored Eddie
Ortiz and Costilla.
Huckins finished the game going 2-for-3 with
three RBIs and one scored. Costilla and Eddie Ortiz scored two
runs apiece for the Tigers, including Ortiz’s 2-for-4
performance at the plate.
Guymon 5, Clayton, N.M. 2
Guymon and Clayton played a two-inning junior
varsity game with the Tigers coming out on top by three runs.
Fernando Acosta scored a pair of runs for Guymon.
Acosta reached base safely on a single and a hit batsman.
Clarence Gonzales, Kolten Renteria and Colton
Hatfield all slapped RBI singles for the Tigers in the victory.
The Guymon JV improved to 2-7 on the season. JV
is now off for the rest of the week.
Guymon’s varsity squad will go into the “Battle
of the Big Bats” Tournament with a little momentum after this
win over Clayton.
Hobart High School will serve as the tournament
hosts.
The Tigers will play Cache at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Guymon will then play either the winner or loser
of tomorrow’s game between Riverside and Hobart on Friday at
either 1:30 p.m. (consolation bracket) or 6:30 p.m.
(championship bracket).
The consolation championship is set for Saturday
at 1:30 p.m., followed by the third-place game at 4 p.m. and the
championship at 6:30 p.m.
Randy Costilla is expected to sit out the
tournament with a knee injury. Matt Burkett will not play in
Thursday’s game because he will be at the state speech and
debate contest.
