Guymon’s Daniel Guadian
throws toward first after making a play during the second game
of Monday’s junior varsity doubleheader between the Tigers and
Hugoton, Kan., at Asa Howard Field. The Tigers and Eagles
split the pair of games.
Buoyed by a strong start at the plate and Matthew
Burkett’s early pitching performance, the Guymon High School
junior varsity baseball team won its first game of the season at
Asa Howard Field Monday.
Burkett gave up three runs in four innings,
striking out five while walking four and allowing four hits.
“His fastball worked well and so did his cutter,”
Guymon junior varsity head coach Wade Whatley said. “Burkett
pitched a good four innings for us. They were only able to get a
few Punch-and-Judy hits off of him.”
Daniel Guadian made things interesting in the
fifth inning, but he was finally able to shut the door on the
Eagles as Guymon won 9-6. The Tigers lost the second game of the
twinbill by a count of 11-6 as the teams reversed roles.
Guymon now stands at 1-5. The junior varsity team
is off for the remainder of the week because varsity will be
playing at Perryton today and in the Route 66 Tournament down in
Clinton Thursday through Saturday.
Whatley said the entire team executed well in the
first game to get ahead in the first place.
Here’s a little recap on both games:
Fernando Acosta went 2-for-3 with two doubles,
two RBIs and one run scored and teammates Hunter Williamson,
Austin Hardman and Burkett all plated two runs apiece for
Guymon.
The Tigers broke out on top early with four runs
in the first. Jacob Stonecipher and Hardman both slapped RBI
singles in the first.
Acosta’s RBI double was the highlight of the
Tigers’ four-run fourth.
Osman Hernandez paced Hugoton with two runs
scored.
The Eagles scored two runs in the first and five
more in the third, which proved to be to big a hole for Guymon
to shovel out from.
Eric Hernandez and Dang Dang scored on Kolten
Renteria’s two-run double in the third as the Tigers closed
within a 7-3 deficit of Hugoton. Burkett smacked an RBI double
as part of Guymon’s three-run fifth, but the rally was stopped
well short.
