CLINTON — Guymon High School sophomore golfer Jade Cruzan posted
an 88 — including a back-nine 42 — during the Clinton
Invitational Tuesday at Riverside Golf Course.
Guymon High School girls golfer Jade Cruzan
Clinton won the large-school division title with
a score of 334, which was 26 strokes better than Elk City.
The Red Tornadoes’ Taylor Neidy won the title
with a 70, seven strokes ahead of Clinton teammate Amanda
Arrington.
Overall, there were 28 teams overall, 14 in both
the large- and small-school divisions.
Chelsea Montano posted a 106, including a 48 on
the back nine. Cytorie Clark finished with a 113, one stroke off
her season-best score.
Guymon coach Jerry Hill commented on the Tigers’
performance.
“The conditions were cold and windy from the
start,” Hill said. “Jade had a little trouble off the tee in the
beginning, but she ended up correcting that on the back nine. As
did the other girls on the team.”
The Guymon girls’ golf team will play host to
their own invitational on Thursday at Sunset Hills Golf Course.
Red Tornadoes use trap to stop Guymon
CLINTON — With Guymon High School forward Ulises
Caba struggling with a strained hamstring, other Tigers needed
to step up their game Tuesday against district foe Clinton.
The Red Tornadoes thrashed Class 4A fourth-ranked
Guymon to the tune of a 4-1 drubbing.
The Tigers were down 2-0 at halftime and couldn’t
quite shovel from the early hole.
“They controlled the ball well and they had good
speed,” Guymon boys coach Mike Taylor said.
Caba ended up scoring the Tigers’ lone goal, an
unassisted effort midway through the second half.
Clinton finished the game with a 12-8 edge in
shots, but the Tigers did have a 4-3 margin in corner kicks.
Unfortunately, Guymon couldn’t connect all four of Victor
Rascon’s corners.
Ivan Hita levied three shots on goal, Omar Mesta
and Tobias Heib two apiece.
Orvil Villalobos and Kip Armstrong split time at
goalkeeper for the Tigers, and combined for seven saves.
The Red Tornadoes ran an effective offside trap
as well. The Tigers were called for 15 offsides during the
contest.
Guymon is 7-3. The team will play at district
opponent Bethany on Friday at 6 p.m.
Clinton girls overwhelm Tigers by six goals
CLINTON — The Guymon High School girls’ soccer
team was down only 2-0 at halftime.
And Shayla Bowers scored a goal to bring the
Tigers back to a 3-1 deficit in the 60th minute of the game.
However, the Red Tornadoes put away Guymon with a
flurry of goals late for a 7-1 victory.
“We just didn’t play well,” Guymon head coach
Delydia Gay said. “Our communication broke down on defense.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers (0-8-1),
who will play at Bethany in another district game Friday.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
Clinton had a whopping 15-4 edge in shots and
Guymon didn’t register a single corner kick.
Veronica Lozano levied two shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Tessica Starkey was peppered during the game, but
made seven saves.
