Facing tough competition in Liberal, the Guymon High School and Junior
High track teams produced some quality marks against a field of Kansas
schools.
Stefanie Almeida and Lauren Gibson each finished second in their
respective running event finals of the high school girls meet. Almeida
timed in a 6 minutes, 11.44 seconds in the 1,600 meters. Gibson posted
a 17.08 mark in the 100 Hurdles.
Junior Vanessa DeWilde had similar success in the field events,
scoring second place marks in the Shot Put (33 feet, 5 1-2 inches) and
Discus (99-4).
Alan Williams had the Tigers only top-three individual time in the
boys meets. That came in the 100, where the junior zipped in at 11.82.
Teammate Josh Pierce was fourth in the 1,600 at 4:59.27.
In the Junior High meet, the Guymon girls Black Team, participating in
the 8th grade division was second in the team standings with 103.5
points. The Tigers and meet champ Liberal West were the only schools
among eight teams to score 100 or more team points.
Ashton Sledge and Carli Purdy finished second and third in the 100
meter hurdles in times of 18.18 and 18.21, respectively. Nancy Garcia
ran the 400 in 1:08.55 for second in that event.
The Tigers won the Medley Relay in 2:04.72 by three, one-hundredths of
a second over Liberal West. Guymon took second place in both the 4 x
100 and 4 x 400 relays.
Guymon’s Orange Team did just as well in the 7th grade girls meet.
Amassing 100 team points boosted them to second place over third place
Kepley who totaled 97.5 points.
Dodge City Middle School ended the meet with 142.5 points to win with
the team title.
Hannah Williamson took the 100 in 14.53 just ahead of teammate Kylie
Falls runner-up 14.62 time. Running in the 200, the Tigers Alex
Aguirre, Katelyn Landes and Paige Holmes came in 2nd-4th place.
Becky Dodgion had the Tigers other individual events win in the 800 by
recording a time of 3:05.43. Guymon won two relays, capturing the 4 x
100 in 58.15 and the 4 x 200 in 2:05.34.
Due to most of the area’s high school opting to compete in Laverne,
Saturday’s high school part of the annual Tiger Invitational at
Memorial Stadium has been cancelled. The Junior High meet will be run
starting at 10 a.m.
The baseball team concluded play in the Hobart tournament with two
losses after a 8-0 shutout win over Frederick in Thursday’s opener. On
Friday, the Tigers fell 9-1 to Class 2A, state-ranked Mangum.
The defeat put Guymon in Saturday’s third place game against Lawton’s
junior varsity team. Where they dropped a 9-4 decision.
The Tigers held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the third inning
when Lawton scored three times. Lawton never relinquished the lead
afterwards.
Danny Ortiz had two of Guymon’s five hits in the game, which included
an RBI double. Kaleb Caudell and Dang Dang also had base hits.
Landon Huckins, the winning pitcher in the Frederick game, was chosen
to the All-Tournament.
This week’s game schedule has changed due to earlier weather
postponements. On Thursday, Guymon hosts Moscow, Kan. Followed by a
single home game Friday with Dumas..
In preparation for Friday’s Tiger Invitational at Sunset Hills, the
boys golf team shot a combined 341 Saturday in Liberal.
Trey Fankhouser carded the best individual round with an 81 followed
by a 85 from Matthew La Grange.
