Beaver’s Ellie Bridwell races toward the
finish line with the baton in her right hand while Guymon’s
Devery Shaddy shadows in pursuit during the 4x200-meter relay
at the Guymon Invitational at Memorial Stadium Friday.
For Guymon High School girls’ track and field
coach Ty Ware, the injuries continue to mount on his squad.
And despite that, the Tigers still finished sixth
overall with 52 points at its own invitational that took place
on Friday at Carl and Lou McKinnon Field here in the city.
Middle-distance and relay specialist Stefani
Almeida suffered a hip flexor and a strained quadriceps muscle.
Briana Labrier, who had been injury free, strained her hamstring
and incurred a sore knee.
The Tigers points came from the relays and
sprints.
Guymon earned a winning time of 52.93 seconds in
the 4x100-meter relay as the quartet of Myca Hunter, Alison
Peacock, Brittany Gallegos and Briana Labrier came through for
the hometowners.
“The sprint relay ran its fastest time of the
year,” Ware said. “Our handoffs were the best they’ve been all
season. The girls stepped up.”
Labrier was injured in the 4x100-meter relay and
was replaced on the 4x200-meter foursome by freshman Devery
Shaddy, who filled in admirably and helped the Tigers get second
(1:57.62) behind Beaver.
“To put a leg like that out there at the last
minute, Devery ran really well,” Ware added.
Brittany Gallegos also added a second-place
effort in the 200 (28.75).
In the team standings, Beaver dominated again in
preparation for its own meet next Friday at McVay Stadium. Most
of the Panhandle schools will be attending this invitational.
The Dusters racked up 193.5 points, almost 100
more than Liberal, Kan.
Beaver won three relays and four different girls
won individual events.
Kamee Gabel leaped to a mark of 4-feet 10-inches
in the high jump to win it. Janene Estala marked at 7-6 to take
the pole vault. Catie Rife raced to a gold-medal time of 51.57
to win the 300-meter hurdles. Ellie Bridwell won the 400 dash
(1:04.16).
Local girls certainly fared well in the field
events as Marisela Gomez from Texhoma took the long jump title
with a lunge of 15-7 and Turpin’s Amanda Becker was the discus
champion (104-0).
In the running events, Hooker’s Laura Voth sat
out the 3,200, giving Texhoma’s Beatriz Rey a chance to win and
she did, clocking in at 14:18.25.
Voth still competed in the 800 and 1,600 and won
those with respective times of 2:39.28 and 5:57.44. Teammate
Saira Ugarté won the 200 dash (28.56).
“Saira was motivated by the fact she was placed
in the second heat (during pre-heating),” Hooker coach Stan
Kachel said. “She’s a competitive young lady. She ran against
the clock.”
Also, Keyes’ Rachel Durham captured the top spot
in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.87 and fellow
Cimarron County athlete Stephanie Tooley from Boise City
garnered the 100 dash (13.13).
