Sunset Hills Golf Course during the Guymon Boys Golf
Invitational Friday. Bottom, Beaver’s Kael McFarland, Guymon’s
own Trey Fankhouser and Woodward’s Ruben Jacquez finished in the
top-3.
Finishing third at its own invitational wasn’t
exactly what Guymon High School head boys’ golf coach Jerry
Cooper had in mind.
The Tigers carded a team composite of 357, which
was 23 strokes behind champion and rival Woodward (334) at the
par-71, 6,079-yard Sunset Hills Golf Course Friday. Perryton,
Texas, was second (345).
“I feel like we should have played better than
that,” Cooper said. “We’re not playing well when we need to.”
Cooper said he would be working with the team on
course management this week, which was one area of concern.
“It’s just common sense things,” Cooper said.
“That’s half the battle out there, realizing when you screw up.”
The Tiger boys golf team is off until Thursday,
April 24, preparation for the 36-hole tournament at Guthrie.
But, there were some definitive highlights for
the Tigers.
Leading off was Trey Fankhouser, who birdied the
par-4, 362-yard 18th, which is the No. 1 handicap hole on the
course, to finish second among individuals.
Fankhouser recorded a front-nine 40 and followed
that up with a 42 on the back nine. He finished three strokes
behind meet medalist Ruben Jacquez from Woodward.
“It was a struggle out there,” Fankhouser, just a
freshman, said. “The wind definitely had a hand in affecting my
round. I made putts when I needed to and that helped.”
On the 18th, the hole he birdied for second,
Fankhouser swung a 9-iron shot onto the green and knocked in a
three-foot putt for the birdie.
“I said a little prayer before my iron shot,”
said Fankhouser, who also had five pars on his round.
“He’s getting his score down there, but I expect
that from Trey,” Cooper said. “He’s such a good athlete and he’s
so talented.”
Trever Lutz and Ethan Novak both carded
season-low 90s. Novak played on the Tigers’ “B” team here.
Unlike Fankhouser, Lutz struggled on the 18th,
hitting the ball into the water thanks to that unnerving wind.
“The wind was ridiculous out here,” Lutz said.
“If it was a perfect weather day, we all would have shot in the
80s.”
Lutz said his short game helped keep his scores
lower, especially his chipping to get the ball in par or bogey
position on the green.
For Novak, it was a mixed bag.
“The wind pushed my ball around a little bit
today,” Novak said. “I tried to keep the ball straight. I made a
few mistakes, but I felt like I improved.”
Novak said putting was his best attribute.
Ethan’s best effort was on his first hole, which he parred. His
tee shot on the par-3, 155-yard Hole No. 7 landed 20 feet away
from the cup. From there, it was a simple two-putt.
That good start helped stake Novak to his
season-best total in the first place.
Jacquez had seven pars en route to taking
medalist honors.
Beaver’s Kael McFarland also posted an 82,
finishing third overall. McFarland parred the 18th hole and he
had nine pars overall.
Turpin’s Addison Ley also finished in the top-10
among local individuals, taking sixth place with an 85.
Rounding out Guymon A’s scores, Dakota Wilson
posted a 91, Josh Edenborough a 94 and Caleb McMurry 99. For the
B’s, Andrew McCulloch fired a 92, Chad Huckins a 101 and Landon
Hyer 102.
