WOODWARD — The Guymon High School girls’ soccer team is making
progress.
Nearly one month ago, the Tigers played the
Boomers here at Carl and Lou McKinnon Field at Memorial
Stadium and Guymon lost 5-0.
Tuesday, the Boomers nipped the Tigers 2-1 at
Boomers Stadium.
Interestingly enough, Guymon had a 1-0 halftime
lead.
Mickey Véla scored an unassisted goal for the
Tigers. Goalkeeper Tessica Starkey made 11 saves.
Overall, both teams took two corner kicks and
Woodward finished the game with a 13-7 edge in shots.
Shayla Bowers levied three shots on goal for
the Tigers, and Veronica Lozano two.
“The girls are getting confidence,” Guymon head
girls’ soccer coach Delydia Gay said. “They know they can play
now. I’m impressed with how they’ve done.”
Guymon’s record stands at 0-6-1 heading into
Thursday’s district game at Cordell. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
while the boys will play at 6 p.m.
Guymon JV triumphs
The Guymon junior varsity girls’ team won its
first game of the season Tuesday with a 2-0 triumph over
Woodward.
Ana Mesta and Elizabeth Montelongo scored goals
for the Tigers.
Jill Brooks earned the shutout in goal for
Guymon. Brooks made six saves.
Brenna Hutchins levied two of Guymon’s five
shots on goal in the contest.

Perryton no-hits Guymon
PERRYTON, Texas — The Guymon High School
baseball team was the victim of a no-hitter on Tuesday as
Perryton, Texas, blanked the Tigers, 11-0, at Mike Hargrove
Stadium.
Andy Galindo and Matthew Burkett drew walks in
the second inning. The runners were on second and first base,
respectively, but couldn’t advance.
Those were the only baserunners allowed by
Perryton pitcher Greg Kirby.
David Morgan smacked a two-run home run for the
Rangers.
Doug Smoak was tagged with the loss for Guymon,
which dropped to 6-5 heading into the Interstate-40 Classic
played host by Clinton High School.
Tigers at I-40 Classic tomorrow
Guymon will begin pool play Thursday against
Cordell in the I-40 Classic.
The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
Teams in the Tigers’ bracket include Clinton,
Sentinel, Navajo, Lookeba-Sickles, Anadarko and Fort Cobb.
Teams will play four pool games. Guymon must
place in the top three to advance to the championship round
slated for Saturday.

BOYS GOLF
Tiger boys golf 5th out of 7 teams
WOODWARD — The Guymon High School boys’ golf
team finished fifth in the large-school division of the
Woodward Invitational that took place at the tough Boiling
Springs State Park Course Tuesday.
The Tigers put together a team composite of
389, which was 17 strokes ahead of Anadarko but 23 strokes
short of Woodward.
Dakota Wilson posted Guymon’s low round with a
91, which included a front-nine 45. Trey Fankhouser carded a
93, including a back-nine 44.
Caleb McMurry posted a 95, including a
front-nine 46. Josh Edenborough and Trever Lutz carded
respective scores of 110 and 113 to round out the Tiger
scores.
Guymon also brought two individual golfers to
the meet.
Chad Huckins fired an even 100 while Andrew
McCulloch put together a 106.
“There’s a big difference between Boise City
and Boiling Springs,” Guymon head coach Jerry Cooper said.
“We’re going to have to work hard in the next three weeks to
make a push for state. We need to take 10 strokes off of every
kid to have a chance.”
Boiling Springs features plenty of trees, tight
fairways and difficult doglegs, the opposite of the municipal
course in Boise City, which the Tigers played on Monday.
Kingfisher won the team title with a composite
score of 329, which was four strokes better than Elk City.
Kingfisher golfer Beau Streck was the meet medalist with a 76,
two strokes better than teammate Jarred Darrough.
In the small-school division, Texhoma placed
third out of four complete teams with a score of 428.
Trey Freeman put together the Red Devils low
round with a 103, three strokes better than teammate Caleb
Crawford’s 106.
Addison Ley posted Turpin’s low round of the
tournament with a 94.
Shattuck’s Kade Young was the medalist with an
80, one stroke better than his brother Kahle Young.
