BETHANY — The Guymon High School boys’ soccer team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Clinton by whitewashing Bethany, 4-0, in district play on Friday.

Omar Mesta netted a hat trick and teammate Jesus Uribé scored one goal and delivered one assist. Tobias Heib and Ivan Hita also had assists for the Tigers as three of the four Guymon goals were assisted efforts.

Ulises Caba didn’t play due to a strained hamstring.

Guymon finished the game with a 16-4 edge in shots and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

The Tigers, ranked fourth in Class 4A according to OKrankings.com, received a fine shutout performance in goal from Kip Armstrong (three saves).

“It was an awesome win for us,” Guymon coach Mike Taylor said. “We were motivated and we were more lively on offense and defense today.”

Hita and Mesta both flicked five shots on goal and Coy Fischer and Heib three shots apiece.

Guymon improved to 8-3 heading into Tuesday’s game against Elk City, which will start at 6 p.m. There will also be a junior varsity  game at 2:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bethany 6, Guymon 0

BETHANY — The Guymon High School girls’ soccer team’s game against Bethany Friday was the mirror image of Tuesday’s loss to Clinton.

The Tigers lost by the same differential it did versus the Tornadoes, falling by six goals (6-0).

Guymon dropped to 0-9-1 on the season heading into Tuesday’s game versus Elk City. The contest will start at 4 p.m.

“We didn’t adjust to their passing,” Guymon coach Delydia Gay said. “They kept passing to their backside and their backs developed the play. And we didn’t get a good finish on the ball.”

Guymon posted 12 shots on goal to Bethany’s 13. Both teams had two corner-kick chances.

Goalkeeper Tessica Starkey made five saves for the Tigers. Veronica Lozano levied four shots on goal and teammate Mickey Véla three.

BASEBALL

Cache 8, Guymon 1

HOBART — The Guymon High School baseball team gave up four runs in the sixth inning as Cache defeated the Tigers 8-1 in the opening round of the “Battle of the Big Bats” Tournament played host to by Hobart High on Friday.

“The sixth inning killed us,” Guymon manager Dave Woodard said. “We had some errors and we made some other mental mistakes.”

Guymon played at 9 a.m. Saturday versus the loser of Friday’s game between Hobart and Riverside.

The only offense the Tigers had to show for in the game took place in the fourth inning. Eddie Ortiz doubled and stole third base. Daniel Ortiz drove home Eddie Ortiz with an RBI fielder’s choice.

Ortiz pitched 6-2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, eight runs (four of them earned), five strikeouts and six walks. Doug Smoak also pitched in the game, in the seventh inning.

Aside from Eddie Ortiz, Raul Carillo, Landon Huckins and Kyle Caudell also sprayed hits for the Tigers.

The Tigers are 8-10 on the season.

Aggie baseball drops a Heartland pair to UT-PB

ODESSA, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Heartland Conference foe Texas-Permian Basin at Roden Field on Friday.

The Aggies lost the first game 3-0 and the second game by a count of 6-5.

OPSU dropped to 11-28 overall and 9-25 in the league. UTPB improved to 27-13, 22-11.

Game One

UTPB 3, OPSU 0

In a pitcher’s duel between UTPB’s Flynn Stachowski and OPSU’s Kyle Cremers, Stachowski was a bit better and earned the win.

Stachowski gave up one hit while striking out 10 and walking two in seven innings of work. Cremers took the loss, despite giving up just three hits and three earned runs while striking out three and walking five.

Fabian Oechsle produced the Aggies’ only hit. No one had more than one hit for the Falcons.

Game Two

UTPB 6, OPSU 5

OPSU had a 5-3 lead, only to watch UTPB score one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the victory.

Clint Stottlemyre scored on an error and Mike Jameson spanked an RBI single to score Luke Korum in the Aggies’ two-run first. Korum scored again on a wild pitch in the third and Matthew O’Neill scored on Garrett Meek’s RBI single.

Andres Balendria plated a run on an Oechsle RBI single in the fourth. 

But that’s when the Falcons mounted their comeback and eventually won the game.

Aggies earn split

GOODWELL — The Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team won its sixth game of the season in achieving a split with Heartland Conference foe Lincoln (Mo.) University.

The Aggies lost the first game 6-2, but came back to take the second game 7-6 to improve to 6-37 on the season.
