Guymon High School’s boys soccer team’s magical ride continued
Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 win over No. 11 Oklahoma City Dove
Science Academy.
The win gives the No. 6-ranked Tigers the District 4A-2
championship and a home game in the first round of the playoffs
next Tuesday. The opponent and game time Tuesday had yet to be
determined as of press time this morning. But the Tigers will play
either Madill or Mt. St. Mary’s.
In Tuesday’s game, the Tigers were a little wobbly at first, but
soon gained control of the field, and the Rockets never really
threatened against Guymon’s staunch defense.
The Rockets showed early that they were a formidable opponent.
“(Dove Science) is a solid team like we’ll be going against in the
playoffs,” said head coach Mike Taylor. “If they weren’t fast they
wouldn’t be in the playoffs.”
But the Tigers are known throughout the state for their speed and
it really made the difference Tuesday.
Guymon had 16 shots on goal " six by senior captain Ulises Caba.
And it was Caba who would draw first blood, scoring the only goal
of the first half at the 17:02 mark.
Caba took a fast break down the right side of the field, circled
around a DSA defender and put it in the net.
“We touched the ball really well,” Taylor said. “We started
passing it. We won’t take it up the wing for some reason. We need
to work on taking it down our side.
“I don’t want to be a prominently right handed or left handed
team.”
The Tigers immediately gained control of the field in the second
half, scoring at the 32:17mark.
Ivan Hita took the feed from Caba on a penalty kick and produced a
beautiful circle kick that got past the DSA goal keeper.
“We try to mix it up,” Taylor said. “We always know that if we
kick it hard enough it’s going to ricochet and hopefully it will
ricochet in the right direction, we get the rebound and make good
things happen.”
The Rockets increased their intensity in the final 20 minutes of
the game, but could not penetrate the Guymon defense.
“We did realy well,” Taylor said.
The fact that Guymon will be hosting its first ever playoff soccer
game bodes well. The next opponent will have a long way to travel,
which does make a difference.
And as Taylor pointed out, “We are undefeated on our field,”
