Guymon’s history-making ride through the state 4A playoffs
continued Tuesday evening with a 3-1 win over No. 14 Madill at
Memorial Stadium in Guymon.
The game was historical in that it was Guymon’s first-ever home
soccer playoff game and the team’s first-ever soccer playoff win.
“We don’t want this ride to end,” head coach Mike Taylor said
after the Tigers dominated Madill, which made an 8-hour bus trip
from the Red River Valley to the Panhandle.
“It feels good,” added senior captain Ivan Hita. “We’re making
history.”
Guymon (10-3) established itself as the dominant team early,
controlling the ball and the tempo of the game.
But the Tigers kept mis-firing, and allowed the Wildcats (9-7) to
draw first blood with a goal at the 6:37 mark of the first half
off a free kick. The Guymon goal tender tipped the ball, but it
got past him and went into the net.
That goal seemed to wake the Tigers up. Just over a minute after
the Wildcats scored, senior captain Ulises Caba put the ball in
the goal to tie it. Omar Mesta followed that up with a fast-break,
getting past the Madill goal tender, but he was all alone and the
Wildcat defense managed to knock the ball away.
“The first half we played bad, we were fighting, not
communicating,” Hita said. “In the second half, we just started
talking and we got the win.”
With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Taylor didn’t mince words
with his team.
“He told us to play as a team,” Caba said.
Caba took that speech to heart.
The senior scored his second goal of the day just 47 seconds into
the second half, planting the ball in the left corner of the net
for a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers continued to control the field for the rest of the
game, with Caba putting the icing on the cake with a goal at the
35:13 mark of the second half.
Jesus Uribe and Victor Rascon joined Caba in attacking the net in
the second half.
The defense looked good, as well, with Madill only managing four
major attacks at the Guymon goal in the entire second half.
Alfredo Baltazar and Coy Fischer defended well for Guymon.
“I was not happy with our play in the first half,” Taylor said.
“We have a tendency to play down to our opponents. If they are
trying to play slow, we play slow.
“We don’t play our game for some reason until I have to lose my
temper and chew on them a little bit.”
Caba was looking forward to a match against Heritage Hall.
“(Madill) beat Heritage Hall 1-0,” Caba said.
But the Tigers will instead play unranked Clinton, which upset the
No. 4 Chargers 7-0 last night.
Game time is 5 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Guymon.
“We’re making history here in Guymon,” Taylor said. “I want to
thank everybody for coming out. It was an awesome crowd, hopefully
the crowd will be bigger for the next playoff game.”
•A pep rally celebrating the Tigers playoff run will take place at
2:55 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, in the Guymon High School gymnasium
... Tickets for the playoff game will be $5 for both adults and
students. Only OHSAA and media passes will be accepted at the gate
... The state semifinals would be next for Guymon should they win
Friday. The Tigers would play either Tulsa Cascia Hall or Oklahoma
City Metro Christian on Tuesday.
