Guymon High School’s Tijh Slaughter wins his heat in the 200-meter dash, but he placed fifth overall in the event at the Liberal (Kan.) Invitational that took place at Redskin Field Friday.

LIBERAL, Kan. — For the Guymon High School boys’ track and field team, it was the sprints that came through.

For the Tiger girls, distance runners and Lauren Gibson provided the bulk of the points.

That’s the way she wrote as Guymon participated in its third meet of the season on Friday at Redskin Field in the Liberal Invitational.

This track event was once on a larger scale and was called the Five State Run, but there were only two states and five high schools represented on this occasion.

Although Guymon finished fifth on both the boys’ and girls’ ladders, there were bright spots that deserve merit.

“We’re not going to build a track program overnight,” Guymon boys’ coach Anthony Fogle said. “Putting in hard work is the hard part. But, we have a lot of speed.”

Girls’ coach Ty Ware was equally complimentary.

“Our mile relay did an excellent job here today,” Ware said. “Brittany (Gallegos) and Shelby (Hayes) ran 10-second faster split times than they had been previously.”

For Ware, the next meet will serve as a homecoming. That’s because the Tigers will compete in the Turpin Invitational next Friday. The meet is slated to start at noon.

BOYS

Tijh Slaughter and Dane Weippert both had an impact on how well the Tigers fared in the sprinting events — especially the Tigers’ winning 4x100-meter relay squad.

Colter Headrick, Dane Weippert, Justin Fogle and Tijh Slaughter put together a gold-medal standard time of 46.24 seconds.

Slaughter also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 24.34. Slaughter won his heat, but wasn’t placed among the fastest entrants since there was a pre-event scratch meeting to preheat the competition.

“Tijh is maturing as a runner,” coach Fogle said. “He’s starting to buy into the fact that 40-yard dash speed in football and a 100-meter dash in track and field are different. He had a good finish.”

Fogle, Weippert, Slaughter and Kolten Renteria placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay, clocking in at 3:59.06.

In addition, Fogle was sixth in the 100 dash with a time of 11.91.

In the field events, Josh Edenborough earned a fourth-place finish in the high jump, marking at 5-feet, 4-inches.

GIRLS

The Guymon girls’ 4x800-meter relay unit had a successful run from start to finish.

First leg Shelby Hayes, second leg Brittany Gallegos, third leg Stefani Almeida and anchor Myriam Hernandez captured second with a time of 11:21.77.

Gibson had an outstanding day for the Tigers, taking top-five finishes in three different events. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.12), fourth in the pole vault (7-6) and fifth in the long jump (13-9 1/4).

“She’s been working hard on the hurdles,” Ware said. “I was impressed with what she did here. She’s also gaining confidence in the pole vault.”

Briana Labrier provided the Tigers with points in the 100 dash, taking third with a time of 13.35.

Guymon picked up points with a piecemeal approach.

Gallegos earned fourth in the 200 (29.54). Hayes was fifth in the 1,600-meter run (6:47.93). Hernandez took sixth in the 400 dash (1:14.70). Bailey Wells, running in a mixed race of junior varsity and varsity, was also sixth in the 3,200 (17:42.97).
