Guymon’s Breck Burkhart performs a deadlift during Friday’s first-ever Guymon Powerlifting Invitational at Tigertown Gymnasium. Burkhart won the 220-pound weight class by lfting 1,120 pounds in three separate lifting disciplines.

For a first-ever meet, the Guymon Powerlifting Invitational at Tigertown Gymnasium ran smoothly.
“I think it was a success all around for us,” Guymon head powerlifting coach Anthony Fogle said. “It was nice to get people involved and it was good to get more (meet) experience.”
As expected, longtime powerlifting stalwart Liberal, Kan., won the meet with 269 points. Guymon placed second with 200 points and Shamrock, Texas, rounded out the top-3 with 168.
The Redskins were led by 275-pound champion Kevin Lam, the outstanding lifter in the upper division.
Guymon’s Breck Burkhart was the big highlight among the hometowners. Burkhart was the golden standard in the 220-pound weight class with a three-discipline total of 1,120.
Burkhart’s final tally was a combination of three lifts — the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. He squatted 405 pounds, produced a 460-pound deadlift and he benched 255.
“Breck’s squat was good,” Fogle said. “He exploded quick and he’s getting a lot of strength. His work habits are really taking off.”
Misha Hall, Jordan Fajen and Nick Marler gave the Tigers a triumvirate of second-place efforts at 168, 242 and 275 pounds, respectively. Dane Weippert and Sean Swanda earned thirds in the respective 198-pound and heavyweight divisions.
Weippert was able to produce a deadlift of 500 pounds as part of his 1,125-pound total behind Liberal’s David Hawk and Shamrock’s Jonathan Bently.
Raul Carillo made strides in the 132-pound division, finishing fifth in the class with a three-discipline total of 655 pounds. T.J. Anderson, at 157 pounds, produced personal maximums in the bench and squat.
Fogle was impressed with Liberal’s contingent, especially in the lower weights.
“They are so strong in the lower weight classes,” the coach commented. “Those kids threw up a bunch of weight.”
Turpin finished fourth overall a team, and the Cardinals had plenty of individual success.
Senior Chase Schmitzer, who was named the outstanding lifter in the lower division, garnered the 157-pound title with three lifts totaling 1,025 pounds. Polito Castillo and Clint Horton went one-two at 145 pounds, including Castillo’s effort of 835 pounds with a deadlift of 365.
“We did well here,” Turpin head coach Mario Mendoza said. “We did better than last week (at their own home meet). The kids are learning how to compete.”
Mendoza is also a former high school powerlifting judge, a job he performed when he was a student at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
Texhoma coach Steve Neptune was happy that the Red Devils didn’t have to travel far from home for a meet.
“It’s good to have one here,” said Neptune, who said his athletes are getting stronger and smarter in the sport.
Bryer Smith was the golden standard at 242 pounds for the Red Devils. Smith put together three lifts that combined for 1,050 pounds, including a 425-pound deadlift.
Texhoma performed well in the lower weight classes. Jorge Moreno and Skylor Rodriguez went two-three at 123 pounds. Hector Marrufo placed second at 132 pounds. And Corey Lomax earned second at 181 pounds.
Hooker also brought powerlifters to the meet with  Brandon Bruner seizing second in the heavyweight division, with a 965 three-lift total, and Tim Stovall capturing third at 132 pounds.
Guymon will have another powerlifting meet next winter, and there’s a possibility the school district could play host to a regional meet as well.
